The best month for cycling and walking
With children, the real obstacle in July and August isn’t distance, it’s the sun. In September, the Mincio cycle path, which starts in Peschiera del Garda and follows the river towards Valeggio and Mantua, becomes a great outing even for younger children. The route is flat and there’s no shortage of shade. The same goes for the lakefront promenade, the villages and the parks nearby. Opening hours get shorter in September:- Theme parks: Gardaland stays open all month, with shorter hours than in summer and usually longer ones at weekends. You can walk there directly from the village or take the free shuttle bus from Peschiera del Garda railway station on opening days.
- Water parks: generally open until mid-month; it’s worth checking dates and opening times on the official websites.
- Boats: the summer timetable for Lake Garda’s public ferries stays in place until early October, with daily connections between Desenzano, Peschiera and Riva del Garda. Updated official timetables are published on the Navigazione Laghi website.
- Museums and smaller attractions: many switches to autumn hours towards the end of the month, with earlier last admissions.
First half or second half of the month?
In the first two weeks, the days are still long, the water is much as it was at the end of summer and every service is running. Once school starts, there are fewer people at the lake during the week, and from the second week onwards, weekdays are noticeably quieter. In the second half, you gain calm and lose a little daylight, with cooler evenings. It’s also when Verona hosts Tocatì, an international street games festival: for three days the squares fill up with traditional games to try, many of them free and outdoors. For families with pre-school children, who aren’t tied to term dates, the second half of the month is often the better choice.Useful information
